WASTE MANAGEMENT LANDFILL EXPANSION/EPA SUPERFUND SITE EXHUMATION – PUBLIC INFORMATION HEARING
Waste Management of Wisconsin has proposed to redevelop a current EPA Superfund site in Menomonee Falls so that it can expand its landfill operations. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has announced an upcoming public hearing on the matter.
Please consider that the primary issue is not the expansion itself, rather the EPA Superfund site that Waste Management requests to disturb and the impact of its exhumation on human and environmental health. We want to ensure our community and the surrounding municipalities are not harmed by the proposed plan.
PUBLIC HEARING DETAILS
Date: Tuesday, May 18, 2021
Time: 5:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.
Where: Village Hall Board Room (Rm. 2245) at W156 N8480 Pilgrim Rd., Menomonee Falls, WI 53051.
The purpose of the hearing will be for DNR to hear oral testimony from people on the proposed expansion. Depending on the outcome of its review, DNR could outright reject the proposal, deny WM’s requests for exemptions to current law, or require additional study by the EPA.
WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE HEARING
The hearing will begin with an overview of the proposed project. Following the project overview, DNR will start receiving oral testimony. All will be given the opportunity to speak. The hearing officer may limit the time for each individual to 3 to 5 minutes, to allow for enough time for each person to be able to speak at least once.
DNR will not be responding to questions, oral testimony or comments during the night of the hearing. A department response to testimony and comments will be provided at a later date in writing.
If you aren’t able to attend, you can still submit your comments or questions. Send those remarks to David.Buser@wisconsin.gov. DNR will accept comments on the proposal until May 28, 2021. All written comments received or postmarked by May 28 will be given the same weight as oral testimony during the hearing. If you do submit written comments, please consider sharing it with us so that we can begin to create a record.
You may also send comments at once to the DNR, EPA, and Senator Tammy Baldwin by visiting our ACT page.
